Keeping House

Back Story: Launched in 1885, “Good Housekeeping” magazine described its lofty mission as "to produce and perpetuate perfection—or as near unto perfection as may be attained in the household." The magazine became famous for its rigorous product testing and the coveted Good Housekeeping Seal, establishing itself as the authoritative voice on all matters domestic.

Working with these 1953 issues, I was struck by how the articles and advertisements focused relentlessly on how a woman could improve her homemaking skills, take better care of her husband and family, save time on her chores, and maintain her physical beauty. Every page offered instruction—the right way to fold linens, the proper detergent for whiter whites, the correct posture for vacuuming. The underlying message was clear: perfection in housekeeping was both achievable and mandatory!
