I try to check out Kristy Battani‘s work every year on the Tour, primarily because she’s always doing something different from year to year and it always seems to blow me away.

Welcome to my Studio

I am Kristy Darnell Battani, an abstract, mixed media artist based in Austin, Texas.

I transform vintage print materials into textured abstractions, creating a dialogue on history, memory and materiality. I like to deconstruct printed objects like manuals, magazines, books and maps to uncover hidden narratives and themes.

My process is intentionally tactile and slow, standing in stark contrast to today’s fast-paced digital era.

My work is intricate, layered and complex—with a bit of whimsy lurking beneath the surface.

The Muses

History may have ignored them, diminished them or flat out erased them.

In this ongoing series, I have reimagined some of the women who broke barriers in their fields to succeed against the odds. Core to the creation process for me is constructing each Muse from bits of vintage print materials relevant to her contributions.

They inspire me.
Maybe they will inspire you, too.
